What Is the Difference Between Licensing & Certification for a Master Electrician?

What Is the Difference Between Licensing & Certification for a Master Electrician

Master electrician is the title someone earns whenever they become the highest skilled level of electrician in the trade. The qualifications for becoming a master electrician vary between each state, without a national standard for education or licensing. Depending on where you live, your state’s regulations will be what determines if you are required to get a certification or a license to become a master electrician.

Master Electrician License

Many states, including Texas, require individuals to obtain an initial license to become an electrician. In order to obtain one of these licenses, you will be required to complete classwork as well as earning work experience or an apprenticeship. Once this is completed, you will also be required to pass your state’s licensing exam. Electricians can only become a licensed master electricians after several years of experience working under a master electrician. The importance of this title and license varies by location.

Master Electrician Certification

In some states certifications are provided to electricians in lew of licenses. In these states, individuals at all levels of this profession must have a certification to work in the state. The requirements for the master electrician credential again are different depending on the state. Most states will provide the certificate to individuals who have worked a minimum of four years as a general electrician and have then passed the state’s master electrician certification examination. Some states also provide additional certifications to electricians who are qualified to perform specialized electrical work. Master electricians earn their certifications from their state governments, not from private accredited organizations.

There are some states where electricians can receive both a license and a certification. Typically, the license gives them the authority to work in their field, while certifications recognize their levels of experience or specialized training. In other states, new electricians must receive a certification, then receive a license when they become master electricians. In this case, the license provides more autonomy than a general electrician’s certificate. The electricians at Texas Electrical have all gone through extensive training and testing.
